Pep Talk!

So you want to take part in one of Europe's largest Fire Festivals?? Well you certainly made the right choice in entering into the mystifying pyromaniac world of firepoint .

Let me give some spellbinding/(or really boring) history of Beltane and what you are most interested to take part in firepoint.

The traditional Gaelic Beltane Fire Festival was recreated into its current form in Edinburgh in the day-glow tacky times of the 1980's (to be more specific 1988). This group of artists and musicians from varied backgrounds took many different Scottish and pan-European Celtic traditions that are rooted in our heritage. Yet often overlooked in our disenchanted society. The Beltane Fire Festival rapidly became a fixture in Edinburgh's cultural calendar and has again made relevant the celebration of the arrival of summer for the people of Edinburgh.

On the eve of Beltane (30th April- 1st May) each year 10-12,00 people of many different backgrounds assemble on top of Edinburgh's most central open spaces Calton Hill. They arrive here to witness a unique event that since it's reincarnation in 1988 has gained international renown and a dedicated local following.

The ritual of Beltane lasts for 3 hours although many people stay on the hill to watch the dawn rise over the city, and wash their faces in the morning dew. For those of you who have not had the chance to take part in performing or even seeing Beltane close up let me briefly describe to you what happens. During the ritual, a fire lit procession of strangely garbed characters, drummers and puppets winds it's way around Calton Hill creating a magical aura. On this magical journey, the procession led by the May Queen meets different groups signifying the aspects of summer.
